cache logical partitions (CLPR)
A user-dedicated region that can be used by partitioning the cache region of a cache memory.
Cache-Hierarchical Star Network (C-HSN)
The network used for transferring data to and from the main global cache.
capital expenditure (CAPEX)
Funds used by a company to acquire or upgrade physical assets such as property, industrial buildings, or equipment.
Chargeback software
Provides IT departments with the ability to implement storage usage chargeback.
Command Control Interface (CCI) software
Software installed on open-system hosts, letting TrueCopy and ShadowImage perform operations on the Hitachi Lightning 9900 and Universal Storage Platform (USP) systems.
command line interface (CLI)
A method of interacting with an operating system or software using a command line interpreter.
common information model (CIM)
A standard that defines how managed elements in an IT environment are represented as a common set of objects and relationships between them.

Data Systems Network-Attached Storage (NAS) Solutions

Device Manager
A Control Panel applet included with Microsoft Windows operating systems that lets the user display and control the hardware attached to the computer.
direct attached storage (DAS)
A digital storage system directly attached to a server or workstation, without a storage network in between.
disaster recovery
The process of regaining access to the data, hardware, and software necessary to resume critical business operations after a natural or human-induced disaster.
disk controller (array control frame)
The circuit that lets the CPU communicate with a hard disk, floppy disk or other kind of disk drive.
domain controllers (DC)
The server that responds to security authentication requests (logging in, checking permissions, and so on) in the Windows Server domain.
An optical serial interface between IBM mainframe computers and peripheral devices such as storage and tape drives.
end of life (EOL)
When a vendor will no longer be marketing, selling, or promoting a particular product and may be ending or limiting support for said product as well.
Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL)
The most prominent Fibre Channel standard.
Fibre Channel protocol (FCP)
Specifically designed for highly efficient operations using hardware.
FICON
The IBM proprietary name for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) FC-SB-3 (Single-Byte Command Code Sets-3 Mapping Protocol) for Fibre Channel protocol.
field replaceable unit (FRU)
A circuit board, part, or assembly that can be quickly and easily removed from a personal computer (PC) or other piece of electronic equipment and replaced by the user or a technician without having to send the entire product or system to a repair facility.
gigabit Ethernet (GigE)
A term describing various technologies for transmitting Ethernet frames at a rate of a gigabit per second, as defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.3-2005 standard.
gigabit per second (Gbps)
A unit of data transfer rate equal to 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps).

Internet Service Provider (ISP)
A business or organization that provides consumers access to the Internet and related services.
Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI)
A network protocol standard ratified by the IETF that allows the use of the SCSI protocol over TCP/IP networks.
Interoperability Laboratory (iLAB)
Concentrates on total customer satisfaction with Hitachi storage area network (SAN) solutions.

kilobyte (KB)
A unit of measure equivalent to 1,024 bytes.
kilovolt-ampere (kVA)

Fall within the range -2 to 128, although some are reserved for special functions.
mainframe
Computers generally used by large organizations for critical applications, typically bulk data processing such as census, industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and financial transaction processing.
mean time between failures (MTBF)
The sum of the mean time to failure (MTTF) and mean time to repair.
mean time between unscheduled interruptions (MTBUI)
Time until systems are turned off, including hardware and software.
mean time to failure (MTTF)
The reciprocal of the failure rate.
mean time to repair (MTTR)
The average time between failing and being returned to service.
megabit per second (Mbps)
A unit of data transfer rate equal to 1,000,000 bits per second.
megabyte per second (MB/s)
A unit of data transfer rate equal to 1,000,000 bytes per second.

operating system (OS)
The software that manages the sharing of the resources of a computer.

A unit measuring one millionth of one millionth of a second.

A system in which a set of data or a particular setting can be restored or recovered.

primary volume (P-VOL)
The volume to which the original data is written.
printed circuit board (PCB)

redundant array of independent disks (RAID)
Data storage systems that divide or replicate data among multiple hard drives.
redundant array of inexpensive nodes (RAIN)
On software to organize multiple separate computer servers to provide data reliability.
The ratio of money gained or lost on an investment relative to the amount of money invested.
rotations per minute (RPM)
A unit of frequency indicating the number of full rotations completed in one minute around a fixed axis.
RSD
See disk array systems division (RSD).
secondary volume (S-VOL)
Receives a copy of the data through either internal or external replication.
serial ATA (SATA)
A computer bus primarily designed for the transfer of data between a computer and storage devices.
server message block (SMB)
An application-level network protocol mainly applied to shared access to files, printers, serial ports, and miscellaneous communications between nodes on a network.
Used by network management systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention.
Small Computer System Interface (SCSI)
A set of standards for physically connecting and transferring data between computers and peripheral devices.

A compact optical transceiver used in optical communications for telecommunications and data communications applications.

storage area network (SAN)
An architecture to attach remote computer storage devices such as disk arrays, tape libraries, and optical jukeboxes to servers in such a way that, to the operating system (OS), the devices appear as locally attached devices.

A kind of computer storage media that can be written to once but read from multiple times.
